Esquinas Rainfores Lodge
Hidden in the jungle of remote Piedras Blancas National Park in southern Costa Rica, Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is surrounded by
thousands of acres of untouched wilderness. It is a retreat for nature lovers wishing to experience the sounds and sights of a tropical rainforest in a tranquil, undisturbed atmosphere.
We are located near the village of La Gamba, only three miles off the Interamerican Highway and a 30-minute drive from Golfito airport.
Esquinas is part of a model project combining conservation, research and community development. We offer a large variety of tours and
excursions that lead through a jungle with a biodiversity equal to nearby Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park. Esquinas has been awarded
a "three-leaf" Certificate for Sustainable Tourism from the Costa Rican Tourism Board ICT.
Main building
The open main building with it's roof made of 60,000 palm leaves was called "a marvel of architecture" by GEO Magazine. It houses the reception,
lounge, bar, and restaurant. Here, guests can enjoy one of our exotic cocktails while listening to an ongoing concert of birds, cycads, and frogs -
accompanied by the pleasant gurgle of Quebrada Negra, the stream which forms the border of Piedras Blancas National Park. Our library contains a
large collection of books about rainforest animals and plants, and the gift shop sells shampoos, jewellery, and handicraft made by local Indians and the women of La Gamba.
Bungalows and Rooms
All 14 rooms have a private bathroom with hot water shower, ceiling fan and full screening. Each room is decorated with colorful materials woven by
the Guaymi and Boruca Indians and can be used as a single, double or triple room. Hummingbirds, parrots, toucans and many more of the 300 species of
birds found here frequent the trees and flowers surrounding the seven bungalows.
Pool and Garden
A crystal-clear jungle stream flows through our pool, which has a year-round temperature of 75 F. We don't need a noisy pump and we don't use
filters or chlorine. Our 37-acre property is at the end of a valley surrounded on three sides by the rainforest of Piedras Blancas National Park.
The unique location attracts many of the birds and animals which inhabit the area.
Walk through the 2-acre tropical garden on a self-guiding nature trail.
Stroll around Lake Esquinas.
Watch the wildlife at dusk or dawn from our secluded lakeside rancho.
Take a guided night hike in the riverbed to see frogs, bats or snakes.
Visit nearby La Gamba Field Station.
Watch our resident caimans Lorenzo and Gambita.
...or just relax by the pool while listening to the sounds of the jungle.
The Osa Biological Corridor
A
"biological corridor" around the Golfo Dulce between Corcovado and Piedras Blancas National Parks connects key natural areas
and forms a 300 square mile protected zone collectively known as "The Osa". The Osa is home to more than 375 species of birds
(of which 362 have been sighted in Piedras Blancas and the Golfo Dulce), 124 species of mammals, 40 species of freshwater fish,
approximately 8,000 species of insects, and 117 species of reptiles and amphibians. The species recorded in the Osa represent up
to 50 percent of the species known to exist in Costa Rica. Except for spider monkeys and tapirs, most of these animals can be found
in the forest surrounding Esquinas Rainforest Lodge. The Osa Campaign is an international effort to protect biodiversity in the
Osa's parks, wildlife refuges, wetlands and forest reserves by improving management practices and buying private lands within the parks.
